TIPS FOR STUDENT FINANCIAL WELLNESS

1. Any budget is better than no budget.

  • Choose a monthly limit. Keep track of earning and spending.

2. A penny saved is a penny earned. Really.

  • The less money you spend, the more money you’ll have when you need it. Take advantage of free events and student discounts.

3. Pay yourself first.

  • Make saving a priority by paying yourself just like you’d pay your bills. Experts suggest 20% of each paycheck. Put it in a savings account.

4. Start building your credit.

  • Try applying for a student credit card. Keep your spending limit low – use it only for your Netflix subscription, cell phone bill or eating out once a week. Pay your monthly balance on the due date, in full (never partial), and over time, you’ll start building positive creditworthiness that will help you buy a car or house after graduation.

5. Buy used.

  • There typically is not a need to buy a brand new textbook. These days, you may also be able to order e-books for an e-reader or laptop and pocket the difference between the virtual and actual text.

6. Find a part time job.

  • A part time job can provide "fun" money that can be used to enjoy college experiences. Don't over work, remember you are in college to learn.

7. Take control, be organized, and keep track.
